Green Laundry Soap: A Tip from Country Clean, New Castle County, DE Best Cleaning Service, Harford County Cleaning Service, Cecil County Cleaning Service

One of our favorite ways to make green cleaning a little easier is in the Laundry Room.

This may sound like a daunting task, but making your own laundry detergent is actually a quick, easy and green way to wash your clothes, linens and towels! It sounds complicated, I know.  But don't be intimidated, it really isn't hard at all! It will save you lots of money, takes only minutes and you can rest assured that you are cleaning naturally! You will be impressed with the end results.

So here's our laundry detergent recipe

What You'll Need:

1 1/4 c. Castile Soap

1/2 c. Super Washing Soda

1/2 c. Borax

Essential Oil (optional)

In a 2 gallon bucket, add the super washing soda and borax. Then, add enough warm water to dissolve. Mix with a stainless steel or other non-reactive spoon.

Add the Castile Soap (our favorite is Dr. Bronner's). Fill the bucket with warm water to the 2 gallon point and mix. Add essential oil if desired. Voila! Homemade laundry detergent!

*Tip* Save your old laundry soap containers to funnel your homemade laundry soap into! This will make pouring easy when it's time to do the wash.

Use 1/3 c. of detergent per load of laundry, just shake up your container before pouring it.

This recipe and will wash 96 loads. We did the math for you to calculate your costs to make this.

Borax-76 oz cost $3.38/box (you'll get 19 uses out of 1 box)=$0.17/batch

Super Washing Soda-55 oz cost $3.24/box (you'll get nearly 14 uses out of 1 box)=$0.24/batch

Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap-32 oz $14.21 (you'll get 3.2 uses out of 1 bottle)=$4.44/batch

So that makes our total cost $4.85 per 2 gallons of laundry soap! That's only $0.05 a load!

How long does it last?

So, for my family of 4, it lasts about 2-2 1/2 months. And we do a lot of laundry, probably a load a day. I've been really pleased with how it works. In my opinion, it works just as good as any other detergent that I've used.  I have also found it to be an excellent stain remover. Blueberry stains wash out amazingly well with it! Overall I love this detergent, the money that I'm saving and how I'm doing my part to be a little greener for my family!
